Growing up amongst the redwoods on the coast of California instilled in me a commitment and a deep sense of responsibility to protect our planet. I founded Joby Aviation fifteen years ago with the belief that electric propulsion would — one day — enable zero emissions aviation.
Aviation today accounts for 2-3% of global greenhouse gas emissions and a greater share of total climate impact due to non-CO2 effects resulting from the combustion of fuel in the upper atmosphere.
Though important for today’s aircraft, sustainable aviation fuels are unable to address these additional emissions or fully eliminate aviation’s carbon footprint. A rapid, significant reduction in the sector’s environmental impact requires us to find ways to speed up the development of true zero-emissions solutions.
At Joby, we have worked for more than a decade to design an all-electric aircraft with zero operating emissions. We intend to build an aerial ridesharing service that will make clean, quiet flight a part of everyday life.
With three of the five stages of FAA type certification completed, we are closer than ever to introducing this new form of clean transportation to the world. We are focused on building an aerospace company — a global manufacturer and service operator — that incorporates sustainability into every facet of our company.
As the industry aims for Net Zero by 2050, Joby leads the way in developing technology for quieter, cleaner skies for all while enabling greater connectivity and continued economic growth.
I want to share some of the steps Joby is taking to help preserve our planet.
